William S. Caskey was the son of Capt. Robert Durland Caskey and Elizabeth (Betsey) Salmon.

Robert and Betsey had six other children: Nelson, Huldah, Robert, Doratha, Caroline, and Hannah.

William married Clarissa Wasson on May 11, 1843. They had six children: William, Robert, Pulaski, Huldah, Jonathon, and Sarah.

William came to Michigan in 1833 and took up a tract of eighty acres of land in Washtenaw County on June 28, 1836. He worked by the month for others until he married Clarissa her father from Genesee County, New York, in 1836 and settled in Unadilla. He and his wife were members of the Presbyterian Church at Plainfield; he assisted in its organization June 1, 1838, at the house of Levi Clawson, and was for many years one of its deacons. William also became an assessor in 1840. In 1844, he commenced improving his land. He and his wife moved into a log house on adjoining land and occupied it the first year, during which time a few acres of land had been cleared, and a log house of the rudest sort had been erected on his own land. From this small beginning, by the strictest economy and industry, a fine farm had been developed from the wilderness. In May of 1838, his real estate and personal estate were worth $560 and he paid taxes of $3.20.
William became a leading citizen in Livingston County; a highway commissioner in 1852, director of the poor in 1853, and a school inspector in 1879.
