Granddaughter of US Senator John Norvell of Michigan and his wife Isabella Hodgkiss Freeman Norvell. Daughter of Colonel Freeman Norvell, fought in the Mexican War and the Civil War, and one time owner of the Detroit Free Press.

She married first Charles Augustus Cotterill (born 1867-died 1918) in Washington DC. She married second Edund Weston Van Dyke, and after his death lived with his brother Harry Van Dyke, also buried in the Van Dyke plot.
