Mary Ellen Casey was the daughter of Kathryn Ducey and William Casey.

During the Potato Famine in Ireland, at the age of 13, her parents sent her to live with an aunt in Bloomington, Illinois. She immigrated to the United States on board the Austrian brig "Baron Yey", arriving in New York City on July 12, 1850.

She married Patrick Roach on October 2, 1864.

Their children were:

Johanna (called Hannah) born on July 30, 1866
Mary (called Molly) born in 1867
Thomas born in July 1871
Ellen (called Nell) born in April 1872
Margaret born in October 1874
Kathryn (called Kate) born on November 22, 1876
Elizabeth born on November 5, 1878

She and most of her family moved to Chicago about 1889.
