Dr. George W. Cleland was born in Savannah, Georgia, in the year 1828; he was married to Miss Mary Wilson Shaw in 1854; he died at 8 o'clock a.m., January 21, 1909, at the home of his daughter in Wagoner, Oklahoma. The funeral services will be solemnized at 3 o'clock tomorrow afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. J. R. Alston, in Wagoner, conducted by Rev. Lloyd of Muskogee, an Episcopal clergyman. The interment will be made shortly after at the city (Elmwood) Cemetery. Dr. Cleland is survived by his widow and by six children as follows; George Cleland, Jr., Emmet Shaw Cleland, James Bancroft Cleland, Mrs. John Rutledge (Sarah) Alston, Mrs. William (Wilhelmina "Ina") Alston, and Mrs. Stephen (Elizabeth "Bessie) Barnwell of Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Cleland was a surgeon of the Seventh Georgia regiment and served throughout the Civil War with gallantry and distinction and he never lost his keen interest in military matters. He took a prominent part in the organization of the Confederate Veterans and was faithful to his old comrades in arms. Dr. Cleland came with his family to this western country from Georgia in 1887 and had resided here continuously ever since. He was a man of great vigor, intellectually and physically. He was in all respects a good man and a good citizen. He will be sadly missed by all his friends and neighbors, for he was held in much esteem by all who knew him. To the bereaved widow, children and grandchildren, the Sayings join with many others in extending condolence in their great bereavement.
