On 14 Jul 1896, Joseph Russell Evans Fine was residing in the Sherlocks Precinct in Mariposa County, California. He was aged 72 years, was born in New York, was working as a miner, stood 5' 11" tall, had a fair complexion, blue eyes, and gray hair. He could not read or write, or mark a ballot, due to being partially blind. His Post Office address was Mariposa. [1896 California Voter Registration]

His Will states he was residing in Mariposa, Mariposa County, California, and he leaves his estate, real and personal in the City of Philadelphia, to his sister, Mrs. Martha G. Lindsay of Bryn Mawr, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, "that was devised to me by my mother Mrs. Eliza R. Fine of said city of Philadelphia". The Will is dated 28 May 1905. On 4 Aug 1905, Martha G. Lindsay renounced all rights of letters of administration upon the estate and requested to grant letters to her nephew, John H. Fine. Francis Gurney Fine of Bryn Mawr signed a document stating he was familiar with the deceased's signature and verified that it was his.
