Enlisted as Musician (Drummer), Co. C, Confederate States Marine Corps, March 1861 at Drewry's Bluff, VA at age 13. Surrendered/paroled at Appomattox, VA April 9, 1865.

After Civil War, served 30 years in US Navy, retiring as Chief Master-at-Arms, at Pensacola Naval Air Station, FL in 1920. During WW1, Scholls served as Chief Master-at-Arms on board the USS Georgia (BB-15).

Entered US Naval Home, Philadelphia, PA in March 1931. Died at Veterans Bureau Hospital, Philadelphia in April 1931,age 83.

Believed to be the last veteran of the War Between the States still serving as of WW1.
