Negro Killed After Retrieving Hat
Struck By Oncoming Car

Robert Woffard, 67-year-old Chickasaw county Negro, lost his life in a highway mishap at Halls Siding, several miles west of Houston on Highway 8, when he recrossed the highway to get his hat which had blown off and was struck by an automobile.

Preston Gilbert Norton of Waynesboro, Miss., driver of the west-bound auto, was apparently absolved. Investigating officers, Patrolman C T Williams, and Field Deputy Andrew Lowrey, did not prefer charges.

The accident occurred about 1:50 pm, Monday. Mr. Norton was driving a car belonging to his son who lives at Cleveland, Miss.

According to officers, the Negro had crossed the highway to his mail box, started back toward his home and had reached the other side when his hat blew off. He went back across the highway, got his hat, and was struck by the oncoming car.

The was the first fatal accident in Chickasaw county in 3 ½ years. The last highway fatality occurred near Houlka four years ago this coming June.
