Eleanor Stevenson was born in Kentucky, the eldest of ten children born to Samuel L. Stevenson and Elizabeth W. Herrin. In the early 1850's, the family moved from Hopkins County, Kentucky to Plattsburg, Clinton County, Missouri. On 10 April 1853, the family left Missouri, heading west, and arrived in Wilbur, Douglas County, Oregon on 8 September 1853. The following year, 19-year old Eleanor married Joseph Samuel Lane in Myrtle Creek. Between 1855 and 1873, Joseph and Eleanor had nine children. The family lived in Myrtle Creek for the most part.

About one and one-half year before her death, Eleanor moved to Portland, where she died. (On her death certificate, her name was rendered as "Eleanor Stevens Lane," her father's name as "Stevens" and her mother's name as "Harron.")

Where Joseph and Eleanor are buried is quite close to the Stevenson family plot of Eleanor's brother, George Herrin Stevenson.
