Robert D. "Bob" LacKamp, 86, died Jan. 5, 2004 in Hutchinson Hospital.
He was born Nov. 6, 1917, at Wichita, the son of William L. and Margaret Ann Miller LacKamp. A longtime Inman and Hutchinson area resident, he was 1935 graduate of Hutchinson High School, where he was on the honor society and had attended Hutchinson Cummunity College. He and his wife owned the City Market, Inman, for 1935 to 1955. He managed the Jack and Jill Grocery on East 4th, Hutchinson from 1959 until his retirement and had also served as the Mayor of Inman in 1955.
He belonged to the 2nd Air Division Association, was a life member of American Legion Lysle Rishel Post No. 68, and was a statistician for the National Junior College Basketball Tournament in Hutchinson for 25 years. He was a longtime sponsor of the former Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps, starting 1962 and served as director from 1966 to 1971. He was a avid golfer, woodworker, baseball fan, a true gentleman, and good husband and father.
He served in the U.S. Army Air corps from 1942 to 1945, he was a World War II veteran, where he was a lead celestial navigator and high altitude bombing radar operator with the 755th Squadron of the 458th Bombardment Group, which was part of Brigadier General Walter R. Peck's 2nd Air Division, which completed 240 combat bombing missions. He was personally involved in 29 missions over Germany, including targets at Magdeburg, Osnabruck, Cologne and Hamburg, where he was the navigator for the lead crew of Captain Scott Hathorn Jr., stationed at Horsham - St. Faith Airfield, England. he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two clusters, then promoted to First Lieutenant on Feb. 5, 1945.
On May 7, 1939, he married Marguerite L. Madge Blessing at Inman. She survives.
Other survivors include a son, Dr. Robert J. and wife Janet Metzinger LacKamp, St. Joseph, Mo; three grandchildren, Isaac and wife Laura LacKamp, San Diego, Dr. Aaron and wife Paula LacKamp, Chicago, and Jonathan LacKamp, St Joseph, MO; a great granddaughter, Hannah Nicole LacKamp, Chicago; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by a brother, William; a sister Noreen "Tommy" Hollowell; and an aunt Laura LacKamp-Fulton.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Elliott Mortuary Chapel, Hutchinson with Pastor Robert L. Albin presiding. Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at the mortuary. Burial will be in North Inman Cemetery, with full Miltary Graveside Honors conducted by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
