Absalom related this story to his children: He was hauling goods from Springfield, Missouri to stock his store in Harrison. On one of these trips he was stopped by a robber near present-day Lead Hill. Ab calmly handed over his valuables including his pistol. As the outlaw prepared to go he suddenly turned around and handed the gun back to the startled merchant. 'Here' he said, 'you better keep this. There's lots of robbers around and you might need it.' Then he rode away.
