Claire attended school in Sherman County, Graduated from Moro High School in Moro, Oregon.
After his retirement he was the custodian at Wy'east High School in Odell, Oregon. He had the nickname "Chief" and is credited with designing the "Tuffy the Eagle" logo for the school. His "Tuffy" he painted right in the middle of the basketball court. When a huge snowstorm caved in the roof many years later, that portion was preserved and now hangs on the wall in one of the gyms at the then Wy'east High School, now the Wy'east Middle School.
