He enlisted in Company B 43rd Ohio Infantry under Captain McDonald when 18 yrs. old near close of Civil War. He went out of service and decided to come to Iowa. he worked a month in Illinois to help pay his way, with money he saved from service and family estate, he purchased 80 acres of land in Appanoose County near Moulton, for $480, where he lived for 20 years. In 1889 he moved to a farm in Caldwell township just west of Exline. In 1900 he moved to Exline. He helped build the Otterbein United Brethren church near Moulton and ws a charter member of the same. On moving to Exline his membership was changed to the Methodist Church there, where he served as janitor for 20 years. Rev. Charles Ellis preached his funeral.
OBITUARY: John Daniels, son of David and Sarah Daniels was born in Jackson county Ohio, July 21, 1847, and passed this life at his home in Exline, Iowa Feb. 28, 1935 at age of 87 years, 7 months and 7 days.
Mr. Daniels was one of a family of 7 children all of whom have preceded him in death. It was there that he met Cynthia Ellen Scurlock, an Ohio girl, whom he married on Sept. 2, 1869. To this union three children were born, one daughter, Emma and two sons Dave and Henry. His wife passed away on October 26, 1898. Two years later he was united in marriage to Clara Emma Elwood October 24, 1900. To this union one daughter Ora was born. His second wife also preceded him in death having passed away at the home in Exline September 6, 1932. In 1889 he moved from near Moulton to a farm in Caldwell township just west of Exline. Here he resided until the year 1900 when he moved to Exline where he has spent the last years of his life.
He is survived by his 4 children Mrs. Emma McCoy of Exline, Iowa, Dave and Henry Daniels of near Centerville, and Mrs. Ora Cline of Exline, by sixteen grand children and 9 great grandchildren besides many other relatives and a large circle of friends.
Mr. Daniels was converted in a school house near Moulton and became a devoted follower of his Savior. He always had a great interest in the work of the church. He assisted in the building of the Otterbein United Brethren Church near Moulton and was a charter member of the same. Upon moving to this community he placed his membership in the Exline Methodist Church and remained faithful to it and to his Savior to the very end. For about 20 years Mr. Daniels served the church as janitor. It was his delight to assist in the services of the church as long as his health permitted. Through unable to be present in the church services for the past two years he continued to keep the interests of the church upon his heart. Though he was gone from among us, his influence shall continue as a witness for Christ.
Funeral services were held from the Exline M.E. church Sunday afternoon, March 3, 1935, with the Rev. Charley Ellis officiating, assisted by the local pastor Rev. E. L. McClure.
A quartet composed of S.A. Paul, Mrs. Mamie Rowan, Mrs. E.L. McClure and Oscar Sundeen sang "Going Down the Valley" and "The Old Rugged Cross". Rev. and Mrs. E. L. McClure sang "When They Ring the Golden Bells." Miss Eva Adams presided at the piano.
