James was the son of George Awalt (1812-1882) and Rebecca Bradshaw 1815-1870).

He married Mary Louisa Jennings 15 Sep 1880 in Bastrop County. Her middle name was Louisa but she went by Mary Lou.

They farmed land in Eastland County, Texas between the towns of Cisco and Eastland.

Mary Lou died in Jan 1903 and James died in 1909. Their younger children were orphaned and by 1910 Miles, Johnnie and Barbara are enumerated at the "widows and orphans home" at Navarro County, Texas.

By 1920 Miles and Johnnie are back in Eastland County. Wm Miles wife, Vera Blanche Butler, died in 1920. In 1930 Wm Miles was living with his father-in-law, James S. Butler. Wm Miles died Jun 16, 1980 at Eastland Co., Tx.

James apparently married Mrs. Velma Bentley in Easatland County, Texas on 25 Sep 1903.
