Margaret Taft was the daughter of Thomas Hammonds and Polly Price, both of Kentucky. She first married Walter Knapp Lull in Grant County, Wisconsin on August 10, 1851. Walter Lull served with the 20th Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin, during the Civil War and died of disease on December 11, 1862 in Missouri. He is buried at the Springfield National Cemetery in Springfield, Missouri.

Margaret next married John C. Sargent on January 16, 1865 in Grant County, Wisconsin. Her third marriage was to Nelson B. Moody, who served in the 42nd Infantry Regiment, Wisconsin. And when Nelson B. Moody died in 1872, she married for a fourth time to Abram Taft on September 19, 1876 in Grant County, Wisconsin.
