George, a son of Isaac Anderson and Anna Stauffer, was among the ranks of the brave boys in blue who went forth in defense of the nation's integrity during the dark and stormy epoch of the Civil war.

"George enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 102nd OVI, on 6 August 1862 at the age of 22. He was captured at Athens, Alabama on 24 September 1864 in action against rebel troops commanded by CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. Exchanged on 22 April 1865. Mustered Out 20 May 1865 at Columbus, Ohio." [submitted by F-A-G contributor lanterns2; ref. "History of the 102d OVI", George S. Schmutz, 1907].

"George enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 102nd OVI, on 6 August 1862 at the age of 22. On 24 September 1864, while the regiment was stationed in garrison at Decatur, AL, Pvt. Anderson was assigned to a detachment sent in relief of Ft. Henderson at nearby Athens, AL, which was under siege by rebel cavalry under the command of CSA Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest. After detraining, the detachment began fighting to gain the fort, and had made good progress, when the fort was unexpectedly surrendered by its commander. Forrest then forced the relief detachment to surrender as well. Most of those captured were sent to Cahaba Prison. He was exchanged on 22 April 1865 and survived the explosion and fire aboard the steamer Sultana near Memphis, TN, on the night of 27 April 1865. He was mustered out on 20 May 1865 at Columbus, Ohio." [submitted by F-A-G contributor lanterns2].
