Samuel FREY (1821 - 1909) was the son of Rev. James Frey, Sr. and Sarah Noffsinger Frey.
He was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania. At a young age, he migrated to Ohio with his parents. His father was a Baptist minister and farmer in Ohio and later in Iowa.
Samuel Frey served as a Sergeant for the United States Army during the Mexican War in the 1840s.
As he grew up, he worked on his father's farm in Ohio. As a young man, Samuel Frey became a tanner and then served as a soldier in the Mexican War, where he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
Following his Mexican War service, Samuel Frey returned to his work as a tanner. Samuel Frey was united in marriage to Laura Ann Gilbert (1829 - 1851). They were married on 26 April 1849 in Morrow County, Ohio.
Shortly after their marriage, Samuel and Laura Ann Gilbert Frey migrated to Athens Township, Gentry County, Missouri, where Samuel Frey continued his work as a tanner. They became the parents of one child, Mary Ellen Frey.
Following the early death of his first wife, Samuel Frey returned to Ohio, where he remarried to Miss Eunice Kingman Williams. They became the parents of 5 children: Sylvia Angeline Frey, Albert Henry Frey, Emily Judson Frey, and two children who died in early infancy.
Samuel and Eunice Frey lived for a few years in Lexington, Ohio, but in the later 1850s, Samuel and Eunice Frey became residents of Shelby, Richland County, Ohio. From that point forward, they lived in Shelby, Ohio, for over 50 years.

He was involved in business and civic affairs in the town of Shelby.
For many years, he worked as a billing and shipping clerk at the railroad depot station. He also worked as a baggage master at the railroad depot. At one time, Samuel Frey worked as a miller at one of the flour grinding mills in Shelby. He later became a merchant and operated a "Boot and Shoe Shop" in downtown Shelby. In his last years, he worked as a postal mail carrier in Shelby with a horse-drawn delivery wagon.
As a Democrat, Samuel Frey was involved in civic activities in Shelby. He served on the Shelby City Board of Health and also served on the Board of Trustees for the Oakland Cemetery. Bible study "Cottage Meetings" were held at Samuel Frey's home through the years. Through the years, he was honored on Memorial Day for his service as a sergeant in the Mexican War. As a veteran, he also assisted with Memorial Day services through the years in Shelby.
In his last years, Samuel Frey became known as one of the last surviving Mexican War veterans in the area around Shelby and was featured in the Shelby newspapers for this distinction and honor.
