John was an artist. He studied at the University of Florida, Rhode Island School of Design, and Cranbrook Academy of Art. For a time he was a patent draftsman in Springfield Massachusetts and in New York City. Later he taught drawing and design at Auburn University and the University of Kentucky. John's paintings used geometric forms and subtle colorings. He did genealogical research on his family and made pencil sketches from old photographs.
