Elizabeth Lucille Bischoff Rumpel, 90, widow of Charles Herman Rumpel, Jr., of Charleston, SC, died on the afternoon of February 5, 2009. The friends and relatives of Elizabeth Rumpel are invited to attend her funeral service Sunday, February 8, 2009 in the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden at two o'clock. Interment, Bethany Cemetery. Friends may call at J. HENRY STUHR, INC., DOWNTOWN CHAPEL, Saturday between four and six o'clock. Elizabeth was born on June 1, 1918 in Charleston, SC the daughter of the late John Carl William Bischoff and Georgia Aichele Bischoff. She graduated from Newberry College, Newberry, SC and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY. She was selected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. Her first job was traveling with the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) out of Camden, NJ. She became supervisor of music for the James Simons, Courtney and Mitchell Elementary Schools, received a life membership in the PTA from the St. Andrew's Elementary School. Elizabeth had a private piano studio of music with Sister Regina Pace, and was a church musician for over fifty years. She served in Redeemer Lutheran Church of Newberry, SC, Congregational Church of Rochester, NY, French Huguenot Church, St. Andrew's Lutheran Church, Second Presbyterian Church, Bethel United Methodist Church, and St. Mark's Episcopal Church, all of Charleston, SC. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, James Island. She was a member of the Pilot Club of Charleston, Music Study Club, President of the Delta Omicron Music Sorority, American Guild of Organists, Federation of the United Methodist Musicians, Charleston Symphony Singers Guild, Garden Club of Charleston, Riverland Terrace Garden Club, Council of Garden Clubs Board, East Low Country District Board, Christian Family "Y" Board, Lady's Benevolent Society, and accompanist for the Charleston Choral Society. She was also the Senior Guide for The Preservation Society of Charleston, The Historic Charleston Foundation, President of the Southeastern Region of Lutheran Students and Secretary of the National Lutheran Student Association of America. She is survived by her sons, Charles Herman Rumpel, III and his wife, Elaine, of Jacksonville, FL and John David Rumpel of Santa Monica, CA. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bishop Gadsden Resident's Assistance Fund, 1 Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, S.C. 29412.
