US Congressman. He was raised in Talladega County, Alabama, studied law, became an attorney in 1851 and began a practice in Henderson, Texas. He joined the Confederate Army's Eleventh Texas Infantry Regiment for the Civil War, advanced through the ranks from Captain to Colonel and commander of the Third Brigade of Walker's Texas Division, and was wounded at the battle of Pleasant Hill. After the war he returned to his Henderson law practice. In 1880 he was a Delegate to the Democratic national convention. In 1882 he was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served two terms, 1883 to 1887. He did not run for reelection in 1886 and returned to his Henderson law practice.
