John was a farmer. He and his wife Carolina (Lena) were charter members of the Sunne Lutheran Church and John was its first secretary. He died from typhoid fever and pneumonia. It is mentioned that he drank polluted water from a stream.

An interesting note... the photo of his grave was taken by his sister, Josephina Willhelmina Backman Olston, in 1903. She was an avid photographer.
