Orin Roy Givens, 72, of Star, passed away June 15, 1993, in a Boise hospital, due to natural causes. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 19, in the Eagle LDS Chapel, 1/4 mile west of Eagle on State Street. Burial will follow at the Kohlerlawn Cemetery in Nampa. Services are under the direction of the Relyea Funeral Chapel.
Orin was born in Nampa, ID on December 2, 1920, the only child of Guy and Carrie Givens. He attended school in Nampa, Dry Creek, Spring Hill, and graduated from Eagle High School in 1940. After graduation he worked in defense housing construction in Bremerton and Seattle, Washington, until enlisting in the Coast Guard, where he served from 1941 to 1944.
Orin married Genevieve Marshall on December 26,1941 in Boise, Idaho. The marriage was solemnized December 7, 1968, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Orin and Genevieve returned to Idaho in 1946, where Orin built cabinets for C.H. Rothwell at Collister Wood and Metal Works for 4 years, then worked as a builder in association with Paul B. Larsen and Richard B. Smith until his retirement in 1980. One of the highlights of his building career was the opportunity it afforded him to work with his sons.
He was a High Priest in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints and served as a Home Teacher, Scout Master, Explorer Leader and Sunday School Superintendent. Orin enjoyed activities with his family that included camping, boating, water-skiing, fishing and hunting. He loved to fly, especially in the backcountry, and acquired a private pilot's license in 1954. This love of flying, combined with a natural and extensive mechanical ability, led to his rebuilding of several airplanes, his favorites of which were Piper PA-12s. Two of the planes are still being flown around the valley. His efforts to rebuild one this past year were cut short by ill health.
Orin has touched the lives of family and innumerable friends and acquaintances through his examples of service, honesty, generosity and unconditional love.
Orin was preceded in death by his parents and an infant granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife, Genevieve, of Star, five children and spouses, Steve and Nadine Givens of Star, Kim and Kay Cherry of Star, Larry and Cherie Givens of Eagle, Guy and Julie Givens of Star, and Dianna, the wife of the late Lonnie Babbitt of Boise; and 21 grandchildren.
A special thanks to Carol Wood and Karen Roberts of St. Luke's Home Care and the St. Luke's Nursing staff on wings 1st West and 4th South.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Mountain States Tumor Institute.
The family will greet friends at a viewing from 7-9 p.m. Friday at the Relyea Funeral Chapel and on Saturday from 8:45-9:45 a.m. at the LDS Chapel in Eagle.
