Nicknamed "Steamboat". He was the grandson, through his mother's side, of M. Jeff Thompson, who was a Confederate General known as the "Swamp Fox" and mayor of St. Joseph. M. Jeff Thompson had the privilege on April 3, 1860 of making a speech and slapping the back of the first pony on its inaugural run of the Pony Express which took place at the Patee House in St. Joseph.

Charles Bailey was president of Englehart-Davison Co., millinery manufacturers, and died at his home at 2521 Francis Street in St. Joseph.
