Presidential Cabinet Secretary, Writer. Born in Pleasant Valley, New York, he was a literary and a politician. He experimented in every genre in an effort to forge a new American literature. His contributions were in novels, poems and stage comedy. Some of his noted works included "The Lay of the Scottish Fiddle" (1813), "Koningsmarke" (1823), "Westward Ho!" (1832), "View of Slavery in the United States" (1836) and "The Old Continental, or the Price of Liberty" (1846). Paulding's government positions were those of secretary to the Board of Navy Commissioners, (1815-23) and Naval Agent in New York, (1824-38). In June 1838, President Martin Van Buren appointed him Secretary of the Navy. As Secretary, his tenure was marked by advances in steam engineering, wide-ranging exploration efforts, enlargement of the fleet and an expansion of the Navy's apprenticeship program. After he left office in 1841, he returned to literary pursuits and took up agriculture until his death at age 81 in Hyde Park, New York.

Green-Wood Cemetery
Section 49, Joined Lots 766 and 914.
These two lots conceal an underground burial vault, the hidden entrance to which is between the 2 groups of stones shown in the photo. The lots were purchased by Gouverneur Kemble, James K. Paulding, William Kemble, Robert P. Parrott, and Richard F. Kemble in 1845. Deceased relatives buried elsewhere were moved here in September of that year. The PAULDING surname can be seen on a tiny lotstone now hidden by shrubbery on a neighboring lot. Six of the stones standing here memorialize members of the KEMBLE family, relatives of Gertrude Kemble, James Kirke Paulding’s wife. She was, in fact, one of the first moved from a previous grave to rest here. In 2017, after nearly 160 years, a stone was erected by the cemetery for James Kirke Paulding. It is immediately to the right of the tall cross at left.
