John W. (Cearnall) Carnell is the son of Hubbard Carnell (1777-1845) and Elizabeth Dixon Carnell (1775-1880). The Carnell's came to Humphreys county from North Carolina and settled on Little Richland Creek. John married Martha Ann White on September 14, 1837. To this union five children were born,

Virginia "Jennie" Carnell McKelvey (1841-1913)
Reddick Copelin Carnell (1850-1941)
Rufus L. Carnell (1850-1850) twin of Reddick.
Dossey Clinton Carnell (1851-1916)

The Carnell family lived in the former home of Capt. William Isma and Martha Yeates White, located four miles east of Waverly on Highway 70.


Virginia "Jennie" Carnell (b.February 1, 1841, Waverly, Tennessee - d. May 13, 1913, Humboldt, Tennessee) married Thomas Goen McKelvey on December 25, 1860.
