Lemuel Robert Birkhead, affectionately known as "Bob" to hundreds of Texas Countians, died suddenly Wednesday night, April 10, at his home.
Mr. Birkhead for many years operated a jewelry store here and was a former police judge for the city of Houston. He was widely known and well liked.

Mrs. Birkhead for the past five years has been the Herald linotype operator.

The obituary follows:

Lemuel Robert Birkhead, son of James W. and Esther Birkhead, was born at Alton, Missouri, June 23, 1901, and departed this life April 10, 1957. He spent his early years in and around Alton, later teaching school in Oregon and Ripley counties. For the past several years he had been employed by the Lilly Store, in whose employ he was when stricken with the sickness that resulted in his death.
Although Bob had been in ill health for some time his passing was sudden and came as quite a shock to loved ones and friends.
He was a member of the Methodist church, the Masonic lodge and the Eastern Star.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl, one son, Wayne, three grandchildren, three brothers, C. W. and Walker, of Houston, and Frank, of Boonville.
Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Harry Jenkins of Bismarck. Mo., Saturday afternoon, April 13, at the Assembly of God Church in Houston. Music was furnished by the Harmoniers Quartet. Pallbearers were his fellow employees of the Lilly Store. Masonic rites were observed at the graveside with interment in Houston Cemetery in charge of Elliott's.
