He was born in Nashville, Tennessee and went to Cumberland School of Law in Lebanon, Tenn., long before it moved to Birmingham to become part of Samford University.

He practiced law in Stuart, Martin County, Florida from 1925 until his death. He served 20 years as part time City Attorney of Stuart.
He served as president of Stuart Kiwanis, Stuart Chamber of Commerce and the Stuart Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees). He was also Lt. Gov. of Kiwanis.

He was married first to Sarah, the mother of his two children. They were divorced in 1944 and he then married his second wife, Ruth Ham.

He died in Stuart, Martin County, Florida
