George Clarke Jones, 81, who for 50 years was associated with the Southern Railway, died suddenly yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock in a local hospital. Mr. Jones made his home at 316 W. 10th St.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 5 o'clock at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. The Rev. Robert L. Crandall, the rector, and the Rev. Henry H. Rightor of Christ Episcopal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
Serving as active pallbearers will be W. A. Shuford, R. A. Zachary Jr., James Stenhouse, Albert Overcarsh, J. A. McGee, and Harold Villas.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Brotherhood of Locamotive Engineers and Dr. L. B. Newell, H. P. Harding, T. H. Wetmore, T. J. Witherspoon, and Fred Bonitz.
The body will remain at Harry and Bryant Chapel in the Oaks until the hour of the service.
Mr. Jones was born Feb. 19, 1871, in Goldsboro, the son of the late J. W. and Nancy Clarke Jones. he retired as a locomotive engineer with the Southern Railway in 1937. Mr. Jones was a member and former vestryman of St. Peter's Episcopal Church and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He and Mrs. Jones, the former Miss Martha Scales, were married in 1895, in Salisbury.
Surviving Mr. Jones are his wife; two daughters, Mrs. R. A. Zachary and Mrs. W. K. Harding of Charlotte; a son, George C. Jones Jr. of Charlotte; and eight grandchildren, R. A. Zachary Jr. of Syracuse, N. Y., Mrs. W. A. Shuford of Durham, Miss Lillian Harding, W. K. Harding Jr., Jannis Jones, Clarke Jones, Gerald Jones, and Mary Madeline Jones, all of Charlotte.
