Earl was the oldest of four sons. As a young man, he was a professional boxer and worked as a barber. For more than twenty years, he worked for the railroad, initially for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, and later for the Pennsylvania Railroad. He married Mabel Pease in 1913. The couple had one son, Elwood, before they divorced. He later married Maude Buff.
