William Harper served in the 35th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He was wounded in the ankle during the Battle of Chickamauga. He was briefly a prisoner of war before being returned at Chattanooga. He recuperated in the hospital at Jeffersonville, IN. He was disabled the rest of his life.
He married Mary Jane Kistler in 1869. They divorced in 1890 and he married Josephine Spaulding Deming and he lived out his years in Jeffersonville with her.
