Jacob Ellis was the son of Johann Jacob Alles (b. abt 1722 Germany, d. 1785 Hanover, Dauphin County, Pennsylania) & Elizabeth (Mohr) Alles (b. abt 1726 Germany, d. Unknown Hanover, Dauphin County, Pennsylania). As an infant Jacob immigrated with his parents from Germany to Rotterdam, Netherlands and then sailed from Rotterdam to Philadelphia Pennsylvania on October 17, 1749 aboard the ship Dragon. Jacob's siblings were: Abraham Alles (b. 1750, d. 1837) and Christopher Alles (b.1763, d.1836).

Jacob Alles served in the American Revolutionary War with his brother Abraham Alles. Abrahan and Jacob enlisted in the Pennsylvania Militia in June of 1776. Jacob was a fifer and lost his fife on the bridge at the battle of the Brandywine. A Veteran of the American Revolutionary War. Pennsylvania Militia, Virginia Militia Served with his brother Abraham. SAR Patriot Index Edition III (CD: PP2210, Progeny Publ., 2002) plus data to 2004. He married Margaret Joel, the sister of Katherine Joel. Margaret was the sister of his brother, Abraham Ellis's second wife. Together they had one son, Abraham Ellis (b. 1795).
