Joshua Twing Brooks, son of Joseph J. Brooks, and husband of Annie Miller-Brooks, is a highly recognized name in Salem's history. He was Salem's first Lawyer, Vice President for the Pennsylvania Railroad, erected eight downtown buildings along East State St. and S. Broadway, most of which still stand today: the Pioneer Block, Guerney, Wilbur, Manilla, Exchange and Victoria, and established the Andalusia Dairy. The dairy was started because J. Twing Brooks had a herd of prize Jersey Cattle and needed an outlet for his milk. Andalusia Dairy operated of more than 60 years, from 1897 well into the 60's. Brooks had a mansion built in which he named "Andalusia Place" at 575 Highland Ave. Built between 1891-92, it had 16 rooms and 6 baths.
