He was born in the Owens Community, Desoto County, Florida. This community was named after his father Owen H. Dishong
. His father was a Pioneer Civic Leader of Desoto County and was the first Sheriff when Desoto County was established and carved from old Manatee County.
He served as Desoto County Sheriff for eight years (1913-1921) before Desoto County was divided into the new county of Hardee in 1921. His brothers Chester and Herbert served as Deputy's under him and his Chief Deputy was Thaddeus S. Carlton. When Hardee County was carved from Desoto his brother Chester became the first Sheriff of the new established Hardee County. Upon completing his second term in office, J.L. Dishong passed the badge of Desoto County Sheriff to the new elected sheriff Joe L. Hampton
Additionally J.L. Dishong served as Desoto County Tax Collector, City Of Arcadia Clerk, and served as Representative for Desoto County in Tallahassee.
After serving as Sheriff he was in the Real Estate business during the land boom of the 1920s. He was a citrus grower and a cattleman all of his life and enjoyed farming.
At the time of his death at the age of 90 he was a member of the Arcadia Kiwanis Club and fifty year member of the Arcadia Elks Lodge as well as fifty year Mason and member of Peace River Lodge #66 here in Arcadia.
