Samuel was the son of John and Nancy Barnes Stanturf. He was born June 10, 1841, Pennsylvania. He married Orpha A Loudenbaen (or Loudenback) September 4th, 1857.
Three children were born to this union.
Samuel joined the 3rd Cavalry Volunteer M. S. M. Regt E. M. M. the 25 March 1862 at Princeton, MO. He was a private in Co F. The 3rd was changed to 7th Regiment Cavalry S. M. Volunteers. Samuel was mustered in 04 April at Chillicothe, MO. On the Muster Roll 31 December 1862 at Springfield, MO as sick in the hospital at Springfield, MO. He died 05 January 1863 in the Hospital and was buried that day in the Springfield National Cemetery.
2. It is not known if he died from wounds obtained in a battle or from illness.
