Miles was the fifth of ten children. On February 25, 1882, he married Louisa Oplinger at St. John's Lutheran Church in Butler Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Rev. J.J. Kuntz performed the ceremony. The couple had nine children: Alice, George Edward, Margaret Ann, William Henry, Stephen Earl, Blanche Caroline, Grant, Claude Melvin, and Dorothy Mae. He worked as a teamster in the coal yard, and in his later years, as a steward at the silk mill.
