James served the Union during the Civil War. He enlisted as a Private in Co. D of the 2nd Arkansas Cavalry on 10 February 1864, in Newton County, Arkansas, at the age of 40. He died in hospital in Springfield, Missour on 13 March 1864. His wife applied for a widow and minors pension in 1866. (Thanks Lynda Rose for this info.)
