The headstone on his first wife's grave marker shows "M" as his middle initial, but it has be also been recorded as "D" and "W" and "H" in various records. It was recorded as "D" on the marriage license and the 1885 Florida census.

His 1872 marriage record and the 1885 Florida Census show middle initial "D"; headstone of his first wife Julia shows middle initial "M"; death certificate of son Ernest and notes from Dr. O. E. Harrell show middle initial "W."

His father was was James Harrell who married the widow of James Story, whose name may have been Eliza or Matilda Hurst, after his first wife died. William's mother may have been a sister to James Harrell's first wife who died around 1850. I found an 1845 marriage record in Thomas County, GA which shows James Harrell married Lavinia Hurst. I believe Lavinia is William's mother and she was probably a sister or cousin to Eliza, step-mother to William.
