His parents were Samuel Haines (the son of Daniel Haines and Mary Price) and Lydia Haines (the daughter of William Haines and Lydia Johnson). He had 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

In 1830, he married Sarah Kinsey. Samuel and Sarah moved to Milton, Miami County, Ohio in about 1845 before ultimately settling in Indiana.

Samuel and Sarah had six children:
*Jesse Haines (1831-1876), m. Eve Kessler;
*Daniel Haines (1833-1894), m. Elizabeth Jane Moore;
*Lydia Haines (1835-1841);
*Job Haines (1837-1915), m. Sarah Elizabeth Meadows;
*John Haines (1841-1842); and
*Isaac Haines (1845-?), m. Missouri Turner.
