CONFERATE STATES ARMY
His date of birth is actually ABT 1843 in Cherokee Co., GA. The discrepancy [a story supposedly told by John Calvin himself] is because John Calvin lied about his age to enlist in the Confederate Army. His parents, Humphrey Posey Rice and Levina Kuykendall were not married until 1841.
He married first, Martha Jane Kelley (1845-1882), and had 3 children: Mary, John Calvin JR and Calvie.
He married second, Eliza Jane Price (1866-UNK), ABT 1894 and had three children: L C, Ashby and Ada Ester.

Inscription
The date on his original headstone, not the confederate service headstone, for his birth is listed as 11 October 1832. I visited the grave in 1889 and the headstone was hard to read but with a rubbing I was able to make out the name - J. C. Rice born 11 Oct 1832 died 28 Apr 1937. He probably lied about his birth date to enlist. He lived with his daughter, Mary L. E. "Mollie" Rice Harness before his death. My grandmother knew him and told me he lived over 100 years and outlived all his wives.
