Sustains Broken Back and Internal Injuries; Passes Away at Hospital
Clarence Bell, 58, of Kincaid died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, February 21, 1946, at St. Vincent Memorial Hospital, from injuries sustained while at work around 1:30 p.m. that afternoon.
Mr. Bell, who worked at Peabody Coal Mine #8 in Tovey, was caught beneath a fall of rock and sustained a broken back and internal injuries. Christian County Coroner Sidney Stilts conducted an inquest into the death in his office at the courthouse on Friday, February 22, 1946, and the death was confirmed as accidental.
Mr. Bell was born February 7, 1888 in Logan, the son of Damon Sr. and Mary Florence (Moore) Bell. He married Maudie M. Sanders on March 17, 1909 in Benton. Mr. Bell worked as a track layer at Peabody Coal Mine #8 in Tovey for two years.
Surviving are his wife, Maudie; one son, Noel Sr. (wife, Gladys) Bell of Chicago; one daughter, Mrs. John (Florence) Burke of Kincaid; his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Damon Sr. and Lola Bell of Logan; one sister, Mrs. Howard (Mariah “Rie”) Finney of Logan; two half-brothers, Claude (wife, Julia) Bell of Taylorville and Lot Holt Bell of Logan; two half-sisters, Mrs. Roy (Patricia) Hughes of Baldwin Park, California and Mrs. George (Fern) Reider of Covina, California; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother; his step-mother, Cora Bell; and one half-brother, Damon Bell Jr.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 24, 1946, at Masterson Funeral Home in Kincaid. Burial followed in Oak Hill Cemetery.
The flowers were carried by Mrs. Millie Joyner, Mrs. Henriella Schulte, Mrs. Carmen Jones, Mrs. Madge Meacham, Mrs. Lydia Moore, Mrs. Laura McClary and Mrs. Mildred Jeffries.
Pallbearers were Andrew Daugherty, Joseph Orlandi, Sam Glascock, William O’Connell, Michael Burke and Joseph Lemanski.
