Caleb was from Woodford County, Kentucky and grandson of Kentucky's first Superior Court judge. His family had extensive land holdings in Kentucky, South Carolina and Texas. He was an attorney. He served in CSA Co. B, Helm's 1st KY Cav.; later joined Co. B, 2nd KY infantry; served in the 8th KY Cavalry. Became separated from his command June 1864 and escaped to Canada. Married Maria Emma Fowler in St. John, New Brunswich, Canada. Pardoned, settled in Marion County, Florida and became a farmer.
