Frank George Bryant Jr., "Tinker," 84, of Roseland, died Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at the University of Virginia Hospital. Born in Bryant on Oct. l6, l924, he was the son of the late Frank George Bryant Sr. and Sarah Harvey Bryant. He was preceded in death by his stepmother, Lillian Harvey Bryant; his sister, Harriet Bryant Peak; his first wife, Sarah Grace Marshall, and three of their five daughters, Margaret Louise "Lou," Patricia Ann and Frances Marshall; and his second wife, Blanche Eleanor Burkhart Burkart.
He is survived by two daughters, Rebecca B. Moyer (Bruce) of Woodstock and Sarah B. Loken (Hal) of Roseland; eight grandchildren, Bruce Allan Moyer II, Patricia Ann Moyer Valenti, Bryant Andrew Moyer, Morgan Moyer, Erik Kristen Loken, Trygve Bryant Loken, Rolf Halvar Loken and Kaia Loken; four great-grandchildren, Olivia Valenti, Anthony Valenti, Grace Moyer and Leah Moyer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He enjoyed the richness of his community and a very large extended family, including the family of Maria Louise "Lou" Purvis who lived at the Bryant homeplace for more than 80 years.
In World War II, Seaman F. G. Bryant Jr., 1st Class, attended Pacific Fleet School and was assigned to the staff of Commander 3rd Amphibious Force Pacific Fleet as a 3-C radio operator. After World War II, he attended Lynchburg College. When he was appointed mail carrier, he returned to Nelson County to the farm that he loved. Tinker carried the mail out of Roseland for 33 years, continuing the route established by his grandfather, A.G. Bryant, and continued by his father, F.G. Bryant Sr. They served for a total of 94 years to the U.S. Postal Service. He had and enjoyed many friends along his mail route, with whom he hunted and fished. He especially enjoyed the children who came to meet him at the mailbox and the cute things they said and did. He and his family were members of Jonesboro Baptist Church for many years.
Funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2009, at Jonesboro Baptist Church, with the Rev. John P. Campbell and the Rev. Wayne Underwood presiding. Burial with military honors will follow in Jonesboro. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, at Byrum-Parr Funeral Home.
