Fred Oermann is recorded in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 census years as a farmer in Big River township in Jefferson County, Missouri. He was born in Prussia in 1828 or 1829 which is consistent with the date of birth on the marker (12 October 1828) in St. Martin's UCC Cemetery.

In 1860 and 1870, he appears to be married to Mary Oermann who was born in Prussia in about 1836. Children in the 1860 and 1870 households, all born in Missouri, are Henry Oermann (born about 1856), Fredrick/Fritz Oermann (born about 1858), Charles (born about 1860), John Oermann (born about 1862), William Oermann (born about 1864), and August Oermann (born about 1866). The 1880 census records two children born after the 1870 census: Mary Oermann (born in 1871) and Conrad Oermann (born in 1873). Missouri death certificates for some of the children identify their mother as Mary Schultze (Charles Oermann), Mary Schuete (John Oermann), Mary Schuetz (August Oermann), Mary Schulze (Mary Anna Oermann Redhage).

The wife Mary Oermann probably died in November 1874. A marker in the F C Oermann lot at St. Martin's UCC Cemetery has an inscription for A M Oermann born in 1836 and died in 1874.

Fred Oermann, widower, married Wilhelmina Koester/Kessler, widow of William Hagemeier, in the last half of the 1870s. Minna Oermann (age 48, born about 1832 in Prussia) is recorded in the 1880 household headed by Fred Oermann. Eleven children are listed in the household. Five are identified as stepchildren of the head. All children have the surname Oermann and are listed from oldest to youngest. The relationships are confused but can be understood if there are four (not five) Hagemeier stepchildren: Mary Hagemeier (born in 1866), Anna Sophia Hagemeier (born in 1868, married first Heinrich Springmeier in 1888 and married second August Kramme in 1891), William Hagemeier (born in 1871) and Minnie Hagemeier (born in 1873, married William Kramme).
