Born on October 8, 1824 in the hamlet of Haverbek, near the town of Damme, Vechta, in current day Niedersachsen, Germany (formerly, Haverbek, Damme, Oldenburg, Prussia), Maria Caroline Bergmann Meiners was the daughter of Heinrich Arnold Bergmann and Maria Elisabeth Deters Bergmann. She had three siblings. Caroline was christened at Saint Viktor's Roman Catholic Church in Damme. The Bergmann family, including their four children, immigrated from Damme to the U. S. on the ship Ernst & Gustav in 1837. Caroline was the first wife of Herman Heinrich Meiners, marrying on July 7, 1846 at Old Saint Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. She died at age 22 in 1847 in Cincinnati during her first childbirth along with the baby, and Herman went on to marry a second and then a third wife.

Family oral history has it that both Caroline and Herman's second wife, Maria Agnes Kramer Meiners, picked out their successor on their deathbeds. Whether or not this is true, Caroline and Agnes both came from Haverbek and were close in age. So they were likely friends and would have frequented each other's homes in Cincinnati. Caroline is buried near her husband in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Cincinnati. Her gravestone inaccurately has her birth year as 1825.

Thanks so much to Mary Donnelly Minges for so much of this information. Special thanks to Elizabeth Kramer Stagg for detailed information on Caroline that allowed for the rewriting of her biography and correction of errors. Any further errors, however, are mine alone.
