Dr. Barbour was a son of Philip C. Barbour, who was one of the judges of the Supreme Court of the United States. He was educated at the University of Virginia and the University of Pennsylvania. Soon after receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1830, he moved to Columbia, Tennessee, where he became distinguished as a practitioner of medicine and as a man of science. He became a professor of Materia Medica in the Medical Department of Kemper College in 1842 and the following year became the chair of obstetrics and diseases of women and children. He was elected to the same chair in 1846 when the medical professors were transferred to the University of Missouri. He continued to occupy that position until his death.
