A Pioneer Woman Gone
Mrs. Elizabeth Griscome Campion, Granddaughter of Betsey Ross, Passes Away, Aged 94 Years.
Mrs. Elizabeth Griscome was born in Baltimore, Md., January 23, 1806, and died in this city Monday, October 29, 1900, at 3:25 p.m., aged 94 years, 9 months and 6 days.
From childhood up, until 1857, she lived in Philadelphia, in which year she came to Fort Madison with her mother and twin sister, Mrs. Sophia B. Hildabrand, where she has resided ever since, making her home with her sister, Mrs. Rachel Albright, the twin sister passing away May 8, 1891, at the same home, 718 Third Street.
Mrs. Campion was a granddaughter of Betsey Ross, the designer of the American flag. She was a woman possessed of fine intellect and rare Christian graces – plain, kind, and lovable, a devoted member of the Episcopal church.
Her death was not preceded by illness, but came in the hours of her happiest and brightest mood. Saturday before her demise she was out upon the streets, visited old friends and chatted in happiest vein, and on the following evening met old friends at home and seemed even brighter and more cheerful than usual. Saturday night she retired seemingly in usual health, but in the morning hours she awakened her niece, Mrs. Kate Robison, who, upon reaching the bedside, found her in a dying condition, death relieved her of life's cares at the hour above stated.
Funeral Announcement
The funeral was held at 10 ‘clock Wednesday forenoon, October 31, from the residence of her sister, Mrs. Albright, 718 Third street, Rev. Dr. W.K. Berry officiating. Interment in the city cemetery.
