Merle Duane Baird was born April 16, 1923, the son of Floyd and Dagmar Dolly Baird, in Hillsboro, N.D. He moved with his family to Cass Lake, Minn., in 1927, where he graduated from high school in 1942. He joined the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II for three years. He married Patricia Clark in 1946, in Grafton, W. Va. He attended aeronautical engineering school in Buchanan, W. Va. They moved back to Bemidji, where he graduated from Bemidji State University in 1950 with a degree in industrial arts and chemistry. He worked for D.M. & IR Railroad and taught school in Owatonna, Minn. In 1954, he went to work for Iowa Mutual Insurance, where he was an adjuster for 30 years. He retired in 1984.
He is survived by his wife; children, Bunee (Jeff) Amble, Carlton, Minn., and Pamela (Rich) Reierson and Scott (Lynn), both of Bemidji; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Wayne Bud and Richard Dick.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, United Methodist Church, Bemidji. Memorials are suggested to Minnesota Library for the Blind, F/T BPH Box 68, Faribault, MN 55021.
