Isaac married Martha Meek, 18 Oct 1857, Winchester, Randolph Co., Indiana. He was the father of Thomas B., Mary Isabell, John Logan, Grant, Martha Ellen, Elias Elonzo, and Viola Betts.

Isaac enlisted 24 August 1861, in Indianapolis as a Sgt. in Co. G, 33 Reg't. Indiana Infantry. He was captured at Thompson's Station, Tenn., on 5 March 1863, and confined at Richmond, Virginia 20 March 1863. Isaac was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, 1 May 1863 from Annapolis, Md. He reported at Camp Norton, Indiana, 14 May 1863. He re-enlisted 28 Jan 1864 at the age of 27 in Christiana, Tennessee; at that time he was described as having "blue eyes, dark hair, dark complexion, is 6 feet 2-3/4 inches high." His rank was wagon master, 33rd Regiment. He received a gun shot wound on 20 January 1864 and was sent to the Regimental Hospital. He returned to duty 14 March 1864. From 25 to 30 September 1864, he was treated for dysentery. Isaac was promoted to 1st Lieut. from 2 Sgt. on 22 May 1865. His post office address was listed as Winchester, Randolph Co., Indiana. Isaac was honorably discharged 21 July 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. He is listed as Isaac J. Betts.
