~MY ANCESTOR~

The son of THOMAS & DOROTHY (BIRD) LORD, he came to America with his parents in 1635. He took the oath of a freeman on June 6, 1638 in Massachusetts. The Boston Transcipt of Nov. 5, 18?? states that his first wife was Harriet (Hattie) Nickerson, but I know of no proof of this and she is not named in other sources. He and his first wife removed to Saybrook (now Lyme), New London Co., Conn. in 1645, being one of earliest settlers and founders. They were the parents of eight children:
WILLIAM LORD (1643-1698), m. SARAH BROOKS (my ancestors)
Thomas Lord (1645-1730), m. Mary Lee abt. 1693
Lieut. Richard Lord (1647-1727) m. Elizabeth Hyde in 1681/2
Mary (Lord) Olmstead (1649-1736) m. Samuel Olmsted
Robert Lord (1651-1739) m. Ester Ward on Jan. 20, 1696
John Lord (1653-1689)
Joseph Lord (1656-1687)

In addition to the land division in Saybrook, in 1648, he purchased an eight square mile tract of land in Lyme from Chapeto, a Mohegan of Woncolus according to the following deed:
"Know all men by these presents that I, Chapeto, a Mohegan of Woncohus my grandfather and Ananpau my father, both of them sachems of Paugwonk, and the said Chapeto having had long acquaintance with William Lord, my very loveing friend, and having singular respects to him did move me to him rather than to any other man to sell my land for acertain sum and Sums of Money, already received the lands specified are as described. . ." Signed by Uncas (his mark), Chapeto (his mark), the Mark of Chapeto's son "Maskoram". The deed was recorded April 6, 1669. In 1681, this deed was confirmed to William's sons. This parcel of land became the village of Salem, Conn.

On June 3, 1664, William married Lydia (Buckland) Brown, daughter of William & Mary (Bosworth) Buckland and widow of John Brown. He filed a prenuptual agreement before their wedding. They were the parents of:
Benjamin Lord (1666-1713), m. Elizabeth Pratt on May 13, 1693
Ensign James Lord (1668-1731), m. Elizabeth Hill
Samuel Lord (1670-1701), m. Susannah Collins.
Dorothy (Lord) Hopson (1672-1705) m. John Hopson of Guilford
Daniel Lord (1673-1702), m. Alice Wheeler of Easthampton, L. I.
Hannah (Lord) Maltbie (1675-1696) m. John Maltbie
Elizabeth (Lord) Hubbard b. abt. 1676, m. Ebenezer Hubbard on March 11, 1707/8.

His widow, Lydia, married (3) Thomas Dunk of Saybrook, CT, and (4) Abraham Post of Saybrook.
