PRAIRIE DU SAC/ VERONA/ RICHLAND CENTER - Lee Halbert Anderson, age 96, died on Sunday, June 18, 2006, at St. Mary's Hospital, Madison, of heart failure. He was born July 13, 1909, to Paul and Dena (Halvorson) Anderson in a log house in Akan Township, Richland County. Lee grew up in Big Hollow with six sisters and two brothers. He attended Upper Knapps Creek School. As a teen and young man, he worked on many area farms, often just for room and board and a few dollars a month. By being frugal at age 17 he was able to buy a new Model T Ford for $412. His entertainment as a youth was playing catcher on the local baseball team. Lee married Margit Goplen on Feb. 15, 1936. Together, they farmed for many years in Akan Township. He later purchased the farm and remained there until 1984. Lee enjoyed farming and always took great pride in his work. Following the passing of Margit, his wife of 50 years in 1986, he spent his retirement years in Prairie du Sac. During that time, he became famous for his gardening skills. He raised corn, cucumbers, tomatoes and especially potatoes for the Five Points Ladies to make lefse for their Norwegian Church Dinner. Lee was proud of his Norwegian heritage and always enjoyed a good Norwegian joke. He had the good fortune to travel to Norway, California, North Dakota, Georgia and Florida. Lee was a lifelong member of Five Points Lutheran Church. He also served as a clerk of Ryan School for 24 years and was a member of the ASCS Farm Program. He had lived in Assisted Living Facilities, Verona, the past three years where he always enjoyed a visit with friends, family and especially his great-grandchildren, who affectionately knew him as "Pa-pa Lee." He is survived by two daughters, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Daughter, Marlene (Stanley) Dingle of Verona; grandsons, Richard (Jodi) Dingle and children, Ryan, Kyle and Sean of Cedarburg; Mark (Jody) Dingle and children, Samantha and Andrew of Madison, Steven (Minda) Dingle and children, Marlee and Simon of McFarland, and John (Carrie) Dingle and children Jack and Max of Madison; daughter, Kathleen Young of Marshall, granddaughter, Debbie Young of Duluth, Ga.; grandson, Jeff (Kim) Young and children, Gabriel and McKenzie of Bishop, Ga.; son-in-law, George Young of Ocala, Fla.; sister-in-law Bernice Anderson of Richland Center; and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Margit; sisters, Minnie Turnmire, Annie Halvorson Oleson, Helen Olson, Mable Clanin, Caroline Harper and Pearl Pittenger; brothers, Herbert and Clifford Anderson; and an infant brother. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, 2006, at FIVE POINTS LUTHERAN CHURCH. Pastor Larry Engel will officiate with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be held a 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 20, 2006, at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL, Richland Center, and at the church on Wednesday after 10 a.m. The family has suggested that memorials may be made to the Five Points Lutheran Church, Four Winds Assisted Living Lodge at 309 Schweitzer, Verona, WI 53593 or to the charity of one's choice.
