LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill. - James "Bud" William Biggs, 84, Lawrenceville, Ill., died at noon Saturday, Dec. 9, 2006, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Vincennes, Ind.
He was born Oct. 15, 1922, to parents Chester and Cleo (Stout) Biggs.
He married Norma Lee Catt of Vincennes on Aug. 29, 1944.
They have three daughters, Sandra Thorn and her husband, David, of Hopkinsville, Ky., Joy Biggs of Lawrenceville, and Elaine Hamer and her husband, David, of Indianapolis; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Two brothers also survive, Chester and Paul Biggs of Vincennes.
James is preceded in death by five brothers; four sisters; his parents; and his loving wife of 61 years, Norma.
James and Norma were lifetime members of May Chapel Church and joined in 1950. James "Bud" grew up farming and with his brother, Chester, farmed as the "Biggs Brothers" after World War II until they retired in 1987. He served as a school board member for Plank Road School and then Hutton School until it closed in 1965. James also served as a volunteer fireman for the Lawrence-Allison Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years and was a captain when he retired.
Besides farming, James sold seed for the DeKalb Seed Company in 1977, until he joined the Pioneer Seed Company in 1979. He was an award winning sales representative, retiring in 1997.
The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in May Chapel Cemetery in Lawrenceville.
